Fisheries Initiatives in South West Cork

The fishing industry is a vital ingredient in the economy of Cork South West and the five capital grant schemes under the Fishing Fleet Development Measure will substantially assist this vital industry along our West Cork coast.

These measures will support 40% of the cost of new vessels and up to 15% of the cost of modern second-hand vessels. They will give special additional assistance to young fishermen/women acquiring their first vessel and give support of 40% of purchase price and installation of safety and life saving equipment.

  • 102 million euro Whitefish Fleet Renewal Programme.

  • National Development Plan - 95m euro Fishing Fleet Development Measure.

  • Substantial Investment in research - 5 years ago there were no full-time Marine Institute or BIM fisheries research and development staff based in the South West. Now there are 7.

"I believe that the future of the fishing industry is being put on a sound structural base and through Processing Grants, Fishing Harbour Developments, Training and Seafood Marketing the future for the industry in Cork South West looks much more secure. The construction of the first ever National Maritime College in Cork is a hugely significant development for the sector generally."
