Agriculture Remains the Backbone of a Vibrant Rural Economy

"My primary task has been to protect and defend Irish farming interests and to turn the tide of hostility and inaction that had become damaging to our farmers under the Rainbow Coalition.

I have fought many tough battles at European Union level and at the World Trade Organisation negotiations and I look back with tremendous satisfaction on our rate of investment in, reform of and delivery to Irish agriculture.

Securing a 50% increase in beef premia, a special milk quota increase and a new rural development package, against all the odds, in Agenda 200 is but an example."
